PR10K = "Promote Running for
10,000
Kids": Program Overview |
|
Excerpt from a letter about the PR10K program:
"Mr. Key ...what I saw was so
powerful. What was even more powerful was the feedback
from students and staff. I was
passing in the hall and the verbal exchange between
students was unbelievable. Adjectives used from the
students were inspiring, motivating, encouraging and
determined, just to name a few. I heard one student say,
"I think I can do anything now." Thank you for
making such a significant impact on the lives of
children." Ann A. -
Principal |
The purpose of PR10K is to establish a
walking or running program for youth and teens,
which promotes a healthy lifestyle, builds self-esteem, and teaches goal
setting skills that ultimately may be used in all aspects of their
lives. The goal of the program is to reach at least 10,000 young people
by enrolling schools
(this includes public, private and home schools, and there is no charge to enroll a school) in the PR10K program, which will give parents,
coaches, teachers and administrators the initial tools necessary to get
students involved in walking or running, regardless if the
student is at a beginner, intermediate or advanced fitness level.
PR10K is backed by the content on Faithful Soles, which is about inspiration,
motivation and encouragement through real-life stories of people
who have set and achieved goals, and in many cases overcome
great personal obstacles. Faithful Soles is not just about walking or
running, it is about celebrating the joys and overcoming the
struggles in our lives.

Robert
Key (standing left), Founder of Faithful Soles, coaching a group of
5th and 6th graders training for their first 5K race (3.1 miles).
His son, Robert (standing right) is a high school senior who has
completed 3 half-marathons (13.1 miles) and he attends various training sessions to be a
teen mentor to the younger
kids. |
The students are introduced to the
PR10K program through a 30 minute DVD that can be shown as part of a
P.E. or regular classroom setting.
Robert Key, Founder of
Faithful Soles, who has given motivational and goal setting
speeches to thousands of runners and non-runners of all ages and abilities, talks on the DVD about his involvement as a
runner beginning in 1970 at the age of 11 up to
present day, where he shares the story of his training and
dedication to accomplish his
dream of running in the 2000 Boston Marathon. Robert then
takes the students through steps on how to set a goal and how those
steps apply to not just a running program, but to other aspects of their
lives, such as being successful in their school work, making
friends or making good choices. The DVD concludes with Robert sharing the story of "The
Greatest Marathoner", perhaps the single most awe-inspiring and
motivational story many of these youth will have ever heard.
After
the DVD is finished, the students are provided with an
information sheet about the PR10K program with a link to the
Faithful Soles web site and how to sign up online. From this
point, it
becomes the responsibility of each individual student and their
parents (or guardian) to enroll and follow the program as
described in the next section (coaches who might want to
integrate PR10K as part of a PE class, cross-country or track
team may
click here to email Robert Key for more details). The main idea is to get the student
and other family members involved together in
accomplishing their goal.

One
example of Faithful Soles outreach to youth is our being listed as a
resource for Prepared 4 Life. P4L empowers youth to become
contributing members of society through asset-based,
experiential after-school programs. P4L recently had 50 youth in an
after school program participate as walkers or runners in the Aramco
Half-Marathon (13.1 miles). Sara Selber, President of P4L, wrote
"Robert, we want to list your site on ours as a resource. Love to
promote good partners!"

Students who become Faithful Soles
members as part of the PR10K program (see details further below regarding
membership) will have their own Faithful Soles Runner ID and password to
login and have full access to all of the inspirational stories and
features on the site, as well as a link to a downloadable "Goal Setting"
form and a printable training log to track by date their mileage and
cumulative mileage, and or time and cumulative time, towards a goal the student sets for
themselves. When the student has achieved the primary goal they set
for themselves on that form, they (with the help of a parent or
guardian) will submit an online form to Faithful Soles and will
be able to download a printable "Goal
Achievement Certificate" in recognition of their accomplishment
where they can add their name, a description of the goal they set for
themselves, and it is signed by Robert Key. For coaches of cross-country or track teams, the "Goal Setting"
form and earning the "Goal Achievement Certificate" are great motivating tools to monitor training and progress
during both the regular and off-season.
Once a school has signed up for the PR10K program, it will also receive
a "PR10K Code", which will be used not only to identify students who sign
up from that school, but also establishes a Faithful Soles fund raising
program for the school (see first section below). The "PR10K Code" will
also be on the information sheet provided to the students that contains the
link to the Faithful Soles web site.

Robert
Key talks to a group of students about how to set goals in not only a
walking or running program, but in other aspects of their lives such
as being successful in school, making friends or making good choices. |
A student may become a
Faithful Soles member to be part of the PR10K program in one of
two ways:*
-
Parents or guardians may enroll a student online by completing the
PR10K youth/teen/student membership registration process ($10.00 for
one year). When the parent enters the PR10K Code assigned to your
school on the membership registration form, 10% of those membership fees will be donated back to the
school on a quarterly basis to support programs of the school's choosing
(this may include a direct school program such as funds for PE supplies,
team such as cross-country or track, support of the PTA, etc.). In addition, for
each membership purchased in this fashion, FS will also provide a
membership to a student who meets the criteria described in the
next section. Parents, if you are uncertain if your
child's school has enrolled yet in PR10K (or if you know for certain they
have not), you may still sign up your
child now in the program, and Faithful Soles will follow up with the
school to get them enrolled in the program if they are not already set up.
-
Coaches, teachers and/or school
administrators may identify students who have expressed an
interest in running, and are in underserved areas whose families
may not have the financial means to enroll as members, and these
students will be provided free memberships by Faithful Soles as they
become available through fees collected from our regular
memberships, membership gifts, and membership sponsorship programs.
Faithful Soles will ask only for the first name, age and grade
of any student meeting this criteria, and will email a
Runner ID and password back to the school's primary contact for
them to provide directly to the student which they may use on
either computers at the school, or at home if they have one.
*The primary contact at the school (such as a coach,
teacher or administrator, which is established on the
school enrollment form), will be
notified by Faithful Soles when a membership becomes available. If there
is not a student at that school which the primary contact believes will meet the
second enrollment criteria above, then Faithful Soles will provide that
membership to a student at another school (this will be done on a rotating basis
starting with the first school to enroll, then the second, third, etc.). Please note that each
Runner ID and password is provided on a per student basis, and a
single Runner ID and password may not be distributed for use to
multiple students. Faithful Soles may track the number of times
each Runner ID and password are logged on, and any abuse of
those privileges with what may be considered excessive logins
from potential multiple users may be cause to have that Runner
ID and password revoked. As with any exercise program, it is the
sole responsibility of the parent and/or guardian of each student enrolled to
determine the level of physical activity that the student is capable of doing. |
